Burns' humanitarian values and works have definitely been a source of inspiration for generations and generations of people who come not only from Scotland, the poet's birthplace, but from all over the world.
The poet's spirit lives on till today, especially in the hearts and minds of Scots who are called to place their nomination for "The Robert Burns Humanitarian Award". Nominees can be from anywhere in the world, of any gender, age or creed and are eligible as long as they can demonstrate they have saved, improved, or enriched the lives of others, by doing so working towards the collective good.
Last year, Sir Tom McKillop, chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland and an avid admirer of Burns said that the award winner is a personification of Burns' enduring spirit who's selfless work will be recognized and highlighted.
The winner will be awarded 1759 guineas (gold coins), the coinage in circulation in the poet's years, signifying the year of his birth. He will also receive a specially commissioned award by a Scottish artist.
